Women Make Music: Fumiko Miyachi

Transitional Metal Debut Album and Tour

Transitional Metal is an eagerly awaited debut portrait album by a composer and pianist whose music is a colorful melting pot of driving rhythms and vibrant harmonies. The programme showcases those pieces which combine her two obsessions: sound and science. Since 2010, she has been working on a series of pieces named after elements: Fumiko has always been drawn to the elegant neatness of the periodic table and the rhythmic drive and clarity of texture inherent in her music which somehow brings to mind the “metal” connection.

Fumiko Miyachi is a composer and pianist. Her music has galvanizing vibrancy and multicultural influences of her European/Japanese background. Fumiko’s pieces have been performed by artists from across the world including Opera North, the BBC Singers and many more. As a pianist, she specializes in performing contemporary repertoire and has premiered and performed many pieces by composers including Michael Finnissy, Laurence Crane, Joe Cutler and Louis Andriessen to name a handful. She has a piano duo with Kate Halsall and since making their debut at HCMF in 2014, they have given numerous performances of new works.
