Claire Louise Staunton

Claire Louise Staunton

Claire Louise Staunton is a curator, arts producer and writer based in London since 2005. Her work treads the lines between artistic mediums, often working with sound in an art context and vice versa.

Claire Louise established the non-profit curatorial agency, Inheritance (www.inheritanceprojects.org) in 2007. Inheritance commissions contemporary artists and musicians to work in direct response to cultural heritage and archives, dealing with issues of historical materialism and temporality. Inheritance is also responsible for curating exhibitions and events programmes that play with our understanding of what comprises a cultural history of a geographical location and population. From 2010 Inheritance will be producing a major cross platform art project in south China, facilitating cultural exchanges between international artists and musicians in partnership with ArtHub Asia and Vision Forum.

Her previous experience was as a curator and co-programmer of the Late Nights at the Whitechapel Gallery, London. The Late Nights began as a risky programme crossing all genres from noise to folk and everything in between alongside temporary video, performance and installation works. Highlights of her tenure included a performance by Davey Graham, Kaliedescope with Damien Roach, Florence and the Machine and Bat for Lashes.

Claire Louise has an MA in Contemporary Art Theory from Goldsmiths and is working towards her PHD. Her writing has appeared in a number of online publications including rhizome.org (USA) and print publications notably Art (BE) and Nowiswere (EU). She is the editor of two books, 'Like Ships in the Night' and 'Time is Money, Efficiency is Life'.

Claire Louise is one of the 8 producers selected to participate in the London pilot of New Music Plus... She has been working with Longplayer as Associate Producer for Longplayer Live:

Longplayer LIVE
Roundhouse (Camden, London)

Big BowlSaturday 12 September: 8.20am - 1.00am

Lasting 1,000 years, Jem Finer's Longplayer is the longest non-repeating piece of music ever composed. Its live debut will be a 1,000 minute section performed by 25 musicians on concentric circles of singing bowls - effectively a vast, bronze-age synthesizer. Alongside the unfolding music, a 12-hour series of one-to-one conversations between 24 speakers includes Jeanette Winterson, Susie Orbach and Ruth Padel, Marcus du Sautoy, Robert Preston and Lisa Jardine. Here's what Claire Louise has been listening to:

Aymeric Hainaux
HainuaxAymeric is a seemingly unassuming French performance artist, musician and graphic novelist whose live performative sonic personal histories are mind and body blowing.

Can't - New Secret
Can'tCan't (Jessica Rylan) is an incredible American artist weaving noises and stories with her own handmade synthesizers, created following her apprenticeship with synth-pioneer Don Buchla. I have wanted to get her over to the UK for years now.

The Raincoats - The Raincoats

The RaincoatsI am always listening to the Raincoats. And, Gina Birch is also playing a Tibetan standing bell at Longplayer Live along with Jem Finer, David Toop, Spider Stacy, Hayley Newman and so many others.

Trash Kit
Trash KitTrash Kit is an exciting and very tight band that I saw for the first time last week. A line-up including former Electrelane bassist and two girls named Rachel, one of whom is an incredible singer/fiddler, the other a drummer. I coincidentally caught the same night bus as the lead singer after the show; she fell asleep and left her violin behind. So if she reads this, I have your violin!

White – White
WhiteWhite is an aggressive but sparkly industrial noise duo from north China. Shou Wang of Carsick Cars and the magical Shenggy from Hang on the Box are two of the few really great new Chinese sound makers.
