Join PRS for Music for just £10 and start earning royalties from your music

PRS for MusicPRS for Music has announced that its writer membership joining fee has been reduced to just £10. Budding songwriters and composers can now join PRS for Music and they will not have to pay a penny until they receive their first royalty cheque. Thousands of people who are just starting to perform their first gigs or receive their first airplay could be earning vital income from their creativity if they joined PRS for Music.

PRS for Music exists to help businesses and all users of music get access to the world’s best loved songs, while making sure that songwriters, composers and publishers are rightfully rewarded.

By joining PRS for Music, members receive royalty payments whenever their music is performed live, played on TV and radio, CDs, DVDs, downloads, streams and everything in between.

The reduction in the writer member joining fee to £10 is to encourage Britain’s emerging musical talent to join PRS for Music. Often songwriters and composers need help in the early stages of their career and reducing the joining fee (previously £100) aims to make it easier and more affordable for music creators to become a part of its growing 60,000 strong membership community.

In 2007 PRS for Music distributed over £500m to its members, with 36,500 members receiving a royalty cheque. Royalty payments start from £1 - which for many members provides them not with a living, but with recognition that their work has been used and they have been rewarded.

The £10 writer membership joining fee is a deferred one-off admission fee available to songwriters and composers who have evidence of one piece of their music that has been broadcast on radio/TV, used online, performed live in concert or played in public.

Jo Prowse, Managing Director of Membership and Operations said: ‘There are potentially thousands of songwriters and composers who could be earning income from their work, particularly the new generation who create and upload their music online but have never heard of PRS for Music. Our £10 writer membership joining fee should encourage this next generation of creators to join our community which represents the likes of Lilly Allen, White Lies, Glas Vegas, Dizzie Rascal and Dan Le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip along with thousands of other emerging creators.’
