The Oram Awards

The first ever Oram Awards took place at the Turner Contemporary in Margate on Saturday 3 July 2017, as part of the Oscillate Festival Of Experimental Music And Sound. Presented by the PRS Foundation and The New BBC Radiophonic Workshop, the new award is for emerging artists in the fields of music, sound and related technologies in honour of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop’s Daphne Oram, and other pioneering women in music and sound.

The first ceremony was hosted by The Guardian’s Kate Hutchinson, who presented two female innovators in music and sound special commendations and PRS Foundation artist development bursaries of £1,000 each, and six other female innovators PRS Foundation bursaries of £500.

The judging panel for the awards included singer Roisin Murphy, mastering engineer Mandy Parnell and representatives from The New BBC Radiophonic Workshop, PRS Foundation and The Daphne Oram Trust.

The event began with a panel discussion featuring Herbert, PRS Foundation chief Vanessa Reed, Frances Morgan of The Daphne Oram Trust and musician Mira Calix. There was also a performance from Mary Stark and a demonstration from Ewa Justka.

The Oram Awards winners were Claire M Singer, Mary Stark, Elvin Brandhi, Kathy Hinde, Sally Golding and Shelly Knotts with Ewa Justka and Klein receiving special commendations, receiving a £1000 bursary each from the PRS Foundation.
