People Like Us & Ergo Phizmiz will present a live PA at The Quay Arts Centre in Newport.
"Using replica wind up gramophones with brass horns and vinyl dub plates pressed with our own compositional parts we will create a live ballroom dance set. We will perform this (walking) around tables in the centre of the auditorium and the audience will surround us and be able to walk around to experience the sounds coming out of each speaker. The sound sources on the vinyl will be entirely from traditional dance music (waltz, polka, samba) and composed by us using laptops to make new compositions.
We are used to a comparatively mystified way of working, using laptops and CDJs, plus standing on a stage - which can further perpetuate a myth that we are making wonderful things with clever machines. Although we love what the laptop can make we are bored with the live laptop genre, an often boring cliché shielding lazy curation favouring process over product, reflecting lack of content.
Apart from occasional playing of instruments, we've rarely moved away from hi-fi based on stage concert playing, so this is an exciting prospect, sure to rub off on subsequent ways of working and increase our communication with the audience."
