Motherland is a cross-cultural African and Asian music-theatre initiative that marks the 200th anniversary of the Abolition of the Atlantic Slave Trade in 2007. The shared histories and experiences of slavery and indentured labour, and the intercultural heritage of India, Africa, the Caribbean and the UK, provide a rich basis for experimenting and creating new work with the South Asian and African Caribbean diaspora who live side by side in Birmingham and across the U.K. The production will tour nationally in autumn 2007.
The PRS Foundation New Works Award will go towards commissioning British based South Indian musician and composer Praveen D Rao to create music for the piece that reflects the complex and dynamic nature of Britain’s cultural landscape.
“This commission will enable me to bring unexplored Indian folk and tribal tunes together with African, Caribbean and urban sounds, both historical and contemporary at the same time.” Praveen D Rao
Music type: Folk, World, Music Theatre
