Who Dares Sings - Michael Henry Commission

Who Dares SingsWho Dares Sings (choral director Kaytie Harding) is a choir for women who thought they couldn’t sing!  Most of them have self-esteem and confidence issues and would never have dreamt of performing on a stage or even singing with a choir.

The Mick Mills Mile project began as a way of including children from the rural primary schools in the Barns Green Music festival (organised by Who Dares Sings).  The choir have commissioned Michael Henry and writer Sue Cooper to compose the piece about the local legend of Mick Mills, the smuggler who raced the Devil in St Leonards Forest in an attempt to keep his soul.  The mile they raced along is still bare today from where the Devil churned up the land.

Participants are the children of Itchingfield, William Penn and Shipley village schools, along with WDSKidz, a childrens choir and Who Dares Sings.  It uses fugue structures and runs along the lines of an epic film score with children adding the sound effects to the adults narration as well joining in rousing choruses, bursting with energy.

Mike Henry has written a piece of incredible suitability for children and adults with elements of simplicity made to sound intricate through the accompaniment and the harmonies.  Added to Sue’s incredibly descriptive lyrics the piece has won the hearts of the children and adults alike!
